KMBZ Weather - Joel Nichols

Channel 9 Weatherman Joel Nichols joined the “Kansas City’s Morning News” team in January, 2010. His weather forecast can be heard with “traffic and weather on the 9’s” every morning from 5am-9am on News Radio 980 KMBZ.
This isn’t Joel’s first radio gig! He was born in a small town in Wisconsin and had his first broadcasting job under his belt (or was it his diaper?) by age three: he did the introductions on his dad's radio show. After earning a degree in education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Joel worked for a state legislator for two years before becoming weekend weather anchor and PM Magazine feature reporter for WMTV in Madison. In May 1988, Joel arrived at KMBC as co-host of FirstNews, then a brand new program for the Kansas City area.

In addition to his weather duties, Joel hosts and produces "Afterwords." It has featured conversations with the likes of Ed Asner, Steve Allen, Phyllis Diller, Rush Limbaugh, Drew Carey, Ellen Degeneres, Buck O'Neil and many more.
Joel has done feature reporting for KMBC covering such diverse subjects as the appeal of Barney the Dinosaur to a backstage visit at "NYPD Blue" to meeting a woman who, for thirty years, has collected cat whiskers.

Joel visits dozens of schools each semester and is in demand as a speaker for all kinds of civic organizations. He also has been an active supporter of many Kansas City area charities including the Jared Coones Foundation, The Salvation Army, D.A.R.E., The Variety Club, Special Olympics and many others. Joel teaches broadcasting at Johnson County Community College. Joel and his wife Jessica have four children and are delighted to call Kansas City home sweet home.
