Schools claim "unfair assessment" in lawsuit

It's onto court this week for 11 school districts that are suing Jackson County. The action isn't unprecedented. Just a few years ago several larger districts in Kansas sued the state because they didn't think they were getting a fair deal. The legal battle made its way to the Kansas Supreme Court which told the legislature they had to change their ways. KMBZ Legal Analyst Jim Wirken says it was an intense battle over how Kansas schools were funded as opposed to their Missouri counterparts. Kansas' education had been funded through the state while schools wanted it to be funded through local sources just as schools in Jackson County, which receive money from local property tax. Now 11 school districts are suing Jackson County for alleged unfair assessment practices. The County Assessor's Office says they aren't doing anything wrong. The first court appearance is Thursday.
