The Kansas City Council went into closed session a little before 2
p.m.today, and it could be a marathon meeting. KMBZ's Bill Grady
reports the big topic on the table will be a proposed settlement of
the suit called “mammygate.' Sources tell KMBZ news that a proposed
global settlement has been reached, meaning Ruth Bates would walk
away from her lawsuit against Mayor Mark Funkhouser and the city. She
claims discrimination from her employment and retaliation for
reporting it. Last week, Bates initial demand was for one million
dollars as a cash only walk away. Sources say city attorney Galen
Beaufort was told to offer less than half that. To get a global
settlement it will take a resolution from a council member and a
majority vote. This, on the eve of trimming the jury panel for a
trial that was set to start Monday.
