Budget cuts in Olathe; Budget delay in WyCo

Several dozen people in Olathe could lose their jobs, and services could be cut back, as the city looks for ways to cut 5-point-3-million-dollars from the 2010 budget. The city continues to grow - just at a slower rate than in the past - and property taxes, sales taxes, and new construction fees are generating less income. Last night City manager Michael Wilkes laid out a budget proposal that calls for saving 1-and-a-half-million-dollars from service cuts... 1-point-1-million-dollars by having the Johnson county sheriff's department take over the Olathe Police dispatching Unit... and 75-thousand-dollars by shutting down the city's animal shelter... that's all according to our reporting partners, nbc action news. In all, 45 full-time positions would be cut. And It'll be next week before leaders in Wyandotte County announce how it'll be handling a loss in state funding. The Unified Government has delayed until Monday - the presentation of its proposed budget for next year. No word on why it was delayed from Thursday. Wyandotte COunty faces a loss of about 6-point-3-million-dollars from the state.
