Charges Filed in Death of Sergio Hernandez

Kansas City, Mo.- Prosecutors announced they have filed charges for the murder of Sergio Hernandez. 27-year old Jose Arturo Banuelos-Arteaga has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Hernandez. Hernandez was to meet a friend on March 15th, but never showed up. His body was later found on March 19th in a business park along Southwest Boulevard. He had been stabbed and dumped in a ditch.

Court documents say that the victim and Banuelos-Arteaga met in a parking lot at 36th and Roanoke on March 15th. While sitting in the defendant's vehicle, the two men began arguing about ending their relationship. Banuelos-Arteaga claimed during the argument the victim pulled out a knife and, during a struggle over the weapon, the victim was stabbed. He then said he drove the body to the location where it was later found and drove the victim's vehicle to the 2800 block of Southwest Boulevard where he left it. After taking his own vehicle to a car wash, Banuelos-Arteaga drove it to Kansas City, Kansas, where he gave it to two men and told them they could have anything in it as long as they burned the vehicle afterwards. The vehicle was found burning Thursday in Shawnee. Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 cash bond.
