A legal rollercoaster continues for a Lawrence, KS resident who's trying to stay in the US with his family.

Today a judge overturned the stay of removal for Syed Jamal.

He was taken out of a detention facility in Texas early this morning and was in the process of being deported back to his native Bangladesh via Hawaii.

His lawyers filed an emergency appeal and a second stay was granted late in the afternoon.

Jamal's attorney Reeka Sharma-Crawford says the whole process has been rushed.

Story continues to develop...

Prior Story:

According to reporting partner KMBC, Syed Ahmed Jamal, the Lawrence, KS resident detained on Jan. 24 by immigration agents, will be deported.

A family friend now says a judge has ruled, and Jamal will be deported to Bangladesh.

Jamal was granted a temporary stay in his case last week after lawmakers got involved in the case, including Rep. Emanual Cleaver (MO-D).

“I am disappointed in the judge’s decision to deport Mr. Syed Jamal," said Cleaver in a statement. "I understand his attorneys are appealing the decision. I will continue my plans to draft a bill to show how this broken and unfair immigration system affects families, who have responsibilities and deep ties to their communities. The system is broken. We need to fix these laws that criminalize hard-working, contributing members of society like Mr. Syed Jamal and that’s what I plan to push for in Congress.”

Jamal’s friends, family and neighbors have been lobbying local and national leaders to allow him to stay in the U.S. after he was arrested in his front yars in front of his children.

Jamal, 55, has a Master’s degree and was teaching future nurses and doctors at area colleges until customs arrested him after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said he overstayed his visa.
