Social service agencies team up to aid Kansas City homeless

A Kansas City charity is beginning a renewed team effort to help homeless people find decent housing.

The program is called Coordinated Entry. Organizers want to bring together various community resources and prioritize the people who are most vulnerable to homelessness. 

"We have five identified sites that are our main screening hubs," said Beau Heyen, CEO of Episcopal Community Services. "We're going to require every social service agency in town, whether it's one of the over 300 pantries in a 30-mile radius, to be referring individuals that identify themselves as homeless to these hubs to be screened and put into prioritization."

The five sites are the Frank Williams Resource Center, Re-Start Housing Solutions, Community LINC, the Kansas City Veterans Administration and the Community Services League. 

It can be difficult to obtain the necessary information to keep tabs on those who need help, because of the number of homeless and services in Kansas City, Heyen said. 

"If you think about people who are unsheltered and living on the streets it's sometimes hard to find them and keep relationships with them, with limited staffing in our outreach departments," Heyen said. "We have amazing people doing the work but they're spread across a large geographical region."

Individual screenings at the five locations will last upwards of one hour each and are on a first come, first serve basis.
