A six-month search for the new superintendent of Shawnee Mission Schools ended with a unanimous vote by the school board to hire Dr. Michael Fulton.

Former superintendent Jim Hinson retired in June.

"What I'll always remember about this process is those last three hours of deliberation, we repeatedly got that list out, and we read it aloud," said Brad Stratton, president of the Shawnee Mission Board of Education. "What are the traits that the community told us they're looking for? That's why it took so long, and that's why I feel so confident that our new superintendent meets what you asked us to find."

Fulton's base pay is listed at $250,000 a year. He comes to Johnson County from the Pattonville district, where he served as superintendent in suburban St. Louis.

"I look forward to joining the Shawnee Mission family and collaboratively working with teachers, support staff, students, parents and community members to build on the strength that is Shawnee Mission," Fulton said.

The board received feedback from the community on priorities that include a student-first philosophy along with the ability to build consensus among individuals and groups with an emphasis on parent involvement.
