Some big plans are in the works for a long-vacant site in Shawnee.

Since the closure of the Dillon's grocery store and the retailers that followed, the Westbrooke Village shopping center at 75th and Quivira has been silent.

Developer MP Westbrooke North is planning to convert the site to a mixed-use residential, retail and restaurant center.

Barring unforeseen concerns from nearby residents, the project should move forward, said Brandon Kenig, city council president.

"This has the potential to be a real economic driver for the city, not just in terms of bringing in new residents, but the new restaurant and retail options that we're hoping to see," Kenig said.

The city has scheduled a public hearing on the Westbrooke development on November 13.

The Shawnee city council will vote on the financing-rezoning portion in December.

Construction would begin in 2018.
