After a years of planning and construction a new Costco officially opened Thursday morning in the Northland.

The 155,000 square foot store is located off 152 Highway and Platte Purchase Drive. Northland residents told KMBZ they were relieved to see the ribbon-cutting because they typically would drive 30 minutes to the nearest Costco.

The store will provide a big economic boost to the area, said Sheila Tracy, Northland Chamber of Commerce president.

"We're excited that Costco chose to be in a very, very successful part of the city and we're excited to support them," Tracy said.

The new Costco, the wholesaler's fifth location in the Kansas City metropolitan area, is not far from a Menard's home improvement store that opened just a few months ago.
