Kansas City, KS - General Motors announced today it was eliminating one production shift out of three at its Fairfax plant in KCK.

The move will happen in September and impact 1,000 workers.

The company says the decision was prompted by declining demand for mid-sized cars. The Fairfax plant manufactures the Chevy Malibu. Sales through May were down 30% from a year earlier.

General Motors announced Friday that it will eliminate one production shift at the Fairfax Assembly plant in September.

The company said that lower demand for passenger cars across the industry has caused it to adjust production of some models.
