Major League Baseball named Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals its American League Comeback Player of the Year after the third baseman hit a team-record 38 home runs in 2017.

Moustakas, 29, missed all but 27 games in 2016 because of a knee injury. His home run total this past season surpassed Steve Balboni's 36 homers in 1985.

The announcement came during the Players Choice Awards show on MLB Network. The Sporting News also named Moustakas its American League Comeback Player of the Year.

Moustakas also set career-best marks in runs scored (75), RBI (85), slugging percentage (.521) and total bases (289). He was also named to the All-Star team for the second time in his career.

Players Choice Award winners in all categories will designate charities to receive grants totaling $260,000 from the Players Trust.
