It was a big win for supporters of the single terminal plan at Kansas City International Airport.

It was not close. The $1 billion project passed with 75 percent of the vote.

"It's a little bigger than I expected but it only goes to show we should never underestimate the people of Kansas City," said Sly James, Kansas City mayor. "When they get it they get it, and on this one, they certainly got it."

City staff changes its focus to working out a contract with contractor Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate.

City manager Troy Schulte said he expects to begin talks with airlines about expanding service to KCI, saying Kansas City is the largest metropolitan area in the country without direct flights to Europe.

Groundbreaking for the new single terminal, where Terminal A is now, is expected next year. Edgemoor expects to finish construction in 2021.
