Followig the lead of city council, the land clearance redevelopment authority has now voted for the project.

Groundbreaking is set for next month, with a 2020 opening. The city invests $35 million and donates the land.

Dan Coffey of  Citizens for Responsible Government wonders whether the room taxes will cover the taxpayer buy in, "I don't know how anybody knows whether it will or not. And the way these hotels have been performing around the country the last several years, they don't produce a profit."

Taxpayers are not liable for cost overruns. Loew's will be the owner-operator. It would be the first convention hotel in Kansas City in over 30 years.
