Inferno guts apartment building, burns 12 homes in Overland Park
8-alarm blaze fueled by brisk winds
Overland Park, KS - A massive fire in an apartment building under construction spread into a nearby neighborhood damaging around a dozen homes.
The fire lit off around 3:30pm at the Royale at City Place, an upscale apartment complex, at 113th and Neiman. The fire consumed the multi-story building and spread to a nearby apartment building and several other buildings on the complex. They were all unoccupied.
Winds pushed the smoke from the blaze into a neighborhood to the south of the complex, as embers reigned down sparking fires in around a dozen homes, according to an Overland Park Fire spokesperson. Ash from the fire have been found across a wide swath of Overland Park.
Despite the giant fire and the multiple homes set alight, no injuries have been reported.
The developer of apartment complex, Block Real Estate, released this statement:
Our main concern is for all of those impacted by the fire, and for the safety of the firefighters and homeowners who are doing all they can to salvage surrounding homes.
As of this hour, we have not been informed of any injuries at the CityPlace development, but we are still attempting to contact those who were working at the site today. The development is under construction.
We are extremely grateful to all of the fire departments who answered the call, and for their heroic efforts. Our thoughts and concerns remain with those who are directly impacted by this event.
