The FBI has seized patient records from an Overland Park pain doctor in connection with a federal case involving an opiate manufacturer.

Dr. Steven Simon has ties to Insys Therapeutics, which makes a spray form of fentanyl, a strong narcotic. The drug is administered in the nose or by mouth.

The Kansas City Star reports that in recent years Insys has paid Dr. Simon more than $200-thousand dollars for speeches and travel expenses. The FBI suspects insurance fraud and kickbacks to doctors who prescribed the drug, which is administered in the mouth or nose.

Six former executives and managers of Insys were indicted last December.  Another doctor at the practice on College Boulevard says he is cooperating with the investigation.
