Voters in Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas narrowly chose David Alvey over incumbent Mark Holland for Mayor and CEO.

Alvey, a school administrator and director of the Board of Public Utilities, won with 52 percent of the vote.

"We've been walking door-to-door for about 30 weeks in a row on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays with my family and friends," Alvey said at his watch party. "It's been a long, hard path; we're relieved, in a way."

Holland faced stiff competition from public service employees, especially KCK firefighters, who held a protest outside City Hall in the final weeks of the campaign. The firefighters were upset about proposed station closures in a consultant's report. Holland had said it was too early to talk about adding or subtracting stations.

Holland is a United Methodist pastor. He did not comment on any future he may have in politics.
