The clock is ticking on the Mission Gateway Project, the latest plan to do something with the open space at Johnson Dr. and Shawnee Mission Parkway that used to be the Mission Mall.

Multiple plans have started and stopped since the mall was demolished 13 years ago.

The stalling and lack of development has generated headlines nearly every year since.

No one understands that more than Tom Valenti, the developer of the 26-acre project along Johnson Drive, between Roeland Dr. and Roe Ave.

"I think one of the mistakes I personally made in the past, is that I was trying to do too much too fast, and it hurt," Valenti said.

Valenti says they are in the process of finalizing building plans with the city's consultant and addressing sanitary wastewater issues with Johnson County.

He plans to make what he calls a big announcement in the next month and he expects to break ground this summer.

Valenti says with the city of Mission giving approval to his mixed-use development, and having the equity for the entire project, retailers and others are jumping on board.

"This whole food and entertainment complex, it think, is going to be just outstanding," Valenti said. "It will definitely work in our favor when it comes to leasing the other components of the project."
